Program Notes:
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is considered a grunge and alternative rock song that inspired hundreds of grunge bands. Its debut was in April, 1991 in Seattle, WA. The song’s title comes from Mennen Company’s deodorant “Teen Spirit”. Lead singer, Kurt Cobain, named the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” after his friend’s advice. However, he was not aware of the deodorant reference until months after the single release. He claimed that the song was about his generation’s uncaring attitude. Regardless of the meaning, the song and music video generated quite a buzz in the music charts, radio and on MTV and the song became a calling card for Generation X.
